The province of Mendoza is a world to discover. Potrerillos, Cacheuta and the Aconcagua mountain are the classics that everyone wants to see on a first visit. Then, the wineries of Luján de Cuyo, Maipú or, a little further away, Valle de Uco. However, the province has much more.

Taking National Route 40 to the south you will find some surprising landscapes. First Las Leñas, Valle Hermoso and El Sosneado. Then, you will reach Malargüe, the southernmost city in the province. It is here where one of the most incredible landscapes in the country awaits you: the La Payunia Provincial Reserve. It is a field of more than 800 inactive volcanoes. The copper, red and grey colours will seem like they are from another planet.

Starting the trip from the city of Mendoza to Valle de Uco by car

To get to Malargüe from Mendoza we recommend taking National Route 40. It is 330 km that are in good condition. But don’t worry, along the way there are many places where you can have lunch, drink a good wine and rest for a few days.

Below we tell you everything you can do in this area.

Atardecer en Valle de Uco

Sunset in Uco Valley

Tupungato

This is one of the towns where you can make a base to get to know the best of Valle de Uco. Here the combination of nature activities and the enjoyment of gastronomy make their presence felt. In the area there are several estancias to enjoy a day in the countryside or even spend a few nights.

Visits to the wineries are a must in the area. For example, in Atamisque you will have an excellent time with the best gastronomy and service. Another option is the La Azul winery, also with lunch service and wine tasting at the foot of the Andes Mountains.

El Manzano Histórico

For those who like history, this is a must-see. The Army of the Andes passed through here and today it is a Natural Reserve that protects the Monument Return to the Homeland of General San Martín. In this area you will find streams, a beautiful grove and ravines. And, of course, the landscape of the Andes Mountains.

If you are looking for adventure activities, there are options for trekking, paragliding and cycling.

San Carlos and La Consulta

In the town of San Carlos, one of the oldest in the province, you will find a place with beautiful mountain landscapes. It is a good place to base yourself due to the tranquility that the town offers. In addition, there is trekking, horseback riding and rafting, among other activities. From here you can book an excursion to reach the Laguna del Diamante Nature Reserve, a hidden place in the mountain range.

Just a few kilometers away is La Consulta. A small town that in its surroundings has some of the best gastronomic and wine tasting experiences in the country. The places you cannot miss (always with prior reservation) are:

At what time of year is it best to visit the Uco Valley

You can visit this region of Mendoza all year round. Summer is hot and dry, while in winter temperatures can drop considerably. The best seasons of the year are spring and autumn. On the one hand, temperatures are more pleasant and you will find fewer people.

On long weekends, places tend to fill up. It is advisable to book a few months in advance if you are going to have lunch at a winery or go on a tasting tour.

How to travel by car through the Uco Valley

From San Carlos, La Consulta or Tupungato you can travel by car through the Uco Valley in two or three days. Of course, if you have more days available, you will do it more calmly and quietly.

The must-see places you have to visit are just a few kilometers from the place where you decide to make your base. The internal roads that run through the wineries are usually dirt or gravel, but they are in very good condition.

Go slowly, and if you drink alcohol, it is better to hire an excursion, remise or taxi that will take you to and from your accommodation.

From the Uco Valley to Las Leñas

Las Leñas is one of the most sought-after ski destinations in winter. In summer, its natural beauty surprises those who are unfamiliar with this area of the province. El Sosneado, the Pozo de las Ánimas and Valle Hermoso are places that will continue to make you fall in love with Mendoza.

El Sosneado

On the banks of the Atuel River, you will find this place famous for its old hotel and hot springs. From here, 4×4 trips start up the Cordillera, as well as treks that invite you to get in touch with the mountains. In addition, activities such as mountain biking or horseback riding are common in this area.

From the old hotel, the four-day trip starts that takes you to the place where the Uruguayan rugby players’ plane crashed in 1972. It is an itinerary that crosses beautiful landscapes as well as places that refer to the history of the area. It is only for people who are between 14 and 60 years old and in good physical condition to undertake this adventure.

We leave you the information of the providers authorized to carry out these adventures.

El Sosneado

El Sosneado

La laguna de la Niña Encantada

Already on Provincial Route 222 heading to Las Leñas, there are some brief stops that are worthwhile. La Laguna de la Niña Encantada is a small mirror of crystal-clear waters produced by underground rivers.

To enter, you must pay the entrance fee.

Los Molles Thermal Center

For those who want a rest and relaxation in the mountains, the Termas de los Molles has all the comforts. It is a spa hotel where you can spend a few days without worries. Whether in winter or summer, it is best to make your reservation in advance.

Pozo de las Ánimas

The Pozo de las Ánimas is a particular geological formation produced by the erosion of underground rivers. It is a water well of about 200 meters in diameter and 80 meters deep.

Pozo de las Ánimas

Well of Souls

Las Leñas and Valle Hermoso

Towards the end of RP 222 is Las Leñas, one of the best ski resorts in the country. Ideal for winter, here you will find all the amenities to enjoy winter sports.

Continuing along Provincial Route 222 you will reach Valle Hermoso, a hidden paradise in the province. The road already has incredible panoramic views, but when you reach the lagoon surrounded by the mountain you will want to stay a long time.

From Las Leñas to Valle Hermoso there are 25 km of gravel. We recommend checking the condition of the road before starting the trip. Calculate the travel time to go and return.

If you are looking to spend a few nights, the Valle Hermoso Eco Lodge is a glamping site where you will have a different experience. It has domes over the lagoon. At night you will find one of the most starry skies you have ever seen. In addition, it offers mountain crossings and excursions.

Las Leñas y Valle Hermoso

The Leñas and Beautiful Valley

How to get to Las Leñas by car

From the city of Mendoza it is 342 km along RN 40, and then RP 222. The road is in good condition and is all paved (except for the section that goes to Valle Hermoso).

If you prefer, you can first go to Malargüe to spend a night, and then take the tour along the beautiful RP 222. From Malargüe to Las Leñas it is only 80 km.

Where to sleep in Las Leñas

Along RP 222 there are cabins and different types of accommodations to spend a few nights. In Las Leñas there are hotels, apart hotels, or apartments where you can stay. If you go in winter it is advisable to book in advance.

On the official website you can check the accommodations in Las Leñas.

Malargüe and the La Payunia Provincial Reserve

Malargüe is the southernmost city in the province of Mendoza. Its natural secrets make it, for now, a hidden gem of Argentina. Although it is usually one of the towns to base yourself and go to Las Leñas, in its surroundings there are some places that are worth visiting.

The must-see is the La Payunia Provincial Reserve, a field of more than 800 inactive volcanoes. But there is much more: a cave where you can see the insides of the earth, a rock formation unique in the country or walk inside a volcano.

La Payunia in Mendoza

To see the volcanoes of La Payunia, you need to take a day-long excursion. In a 4×4 or in a pickup truck, you travel the internal roads of the reserve making different stops. First Pampa Negra, a black plain due to volcanic eruptions. Then, the Morado Volcano. There you take a walk to the crater of the volcano. And finally, La Herradura and Campo de Bombas.

The landscapes are incredible. Volcanic cones, while the copper, reddish and black colors never cease to surprise.

At the Malargüe Tourist Office they provide you with all the information to undertake this adventure.

Castles of Pincheira

Witches’ Cave

South of Malargüe, on RN 40, is the Witches’ Cave. It is one of the only places in the country where you can walk through these tunnels.

It is naturally formed. You will see stalactites, stalagmites and columns. Sometimes, you will have to bend down to be able to go from one side to the other.

You have to visit it with a guide. The excursion is booked a few days in advance at the Malargüe tourist office.

Other activities to do in Malargüe

In the city of Malargüe, there is the Pierre Auger observatory. To visit it, you have to make a reservation a few days in advance.

Also, just 35 km from the city, there is the Malacara volcano. The striking thing about this place is that you can visit the inside of the volcano itself. Due to erosion and wear, together with volcanic eruptions, chimneys and passages were formed that you can walk through. To see it, you have to book an excursion in the city.

How to get to La Payunia from Malargüe

To see La Payunia in Mendoza, you have to book an excursion in the city of Malargüe, or contact an authorized provider beforehand.

We leave you some options so you can visit La Payunia

Can you go to La Payunia by car?

No. Even though it may seem that you can enter with a private car, it is very important to keep in mind that the roads permanently fork. Only local guides know which route to take through La Payunia. In addition, the road is dirt and is not in perfect condition.

Where to sleep in Malargüe

Malargüe has different types of accommodation. If you go in winter, it is necessary to book in advance due to its proximity to Las Leñas. The rest of the year is also convenient, although accommodation is usually found.

Here you can see the authorized accommodations in Malargüe.

When to visit La Payunia

The best time to visit Malargüe and the La Payunia Provincial Reserve is autumn and spring. During the winter, temperatures can be very low, while in the summer, very hot weather can make a day trip more difficult.

Located in the mountains, its waters have therapeutic properties and can be enjoyed all year round. The Thermal Water Park has a hotel, restaurants, a supply store and there are also adventure activities.

If you visit the old Cacheuta station, you will find a suspension bridge over the river. To get there from Potrerillos, there is a tunnel on RP 82 that takes you to Cacheuta along a route that borders the lake.

The tunnels of National Route 7

From Potrerillos to Uspallata you will travel this beautiful scenic route. There are 13 tunnels that cross the mountain. To the right, the Mendoza River will be accompanying you during the journey.

Uspallata and a place with history

Uspallata is an excellent place to base yourself while you travel through the high mountains of Mendoza. More than two centuries ago, it witnessed the passage of San Martín before the Crossing of the Andes. The Uspallata Vaults are one of the most outstanding points to learn about part of the history of Argentina. They were built in the 18th century, but during the wars of independence they were used to smelt the weapons of the army of the Andes. Open every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Another historical site worth visiting is the Cerro Tunduqueral Municipal Archaeological Park. This place has a set of petroglyphs made by the native peoples in pre-Hispanic times. It is 7 km from the city, on RP 52.

Los Penitentes, activities for the whole family

In winter, it is an ideal Winter Park to enjoy activities in the snow. In summer, you can walk around the small tourist village and go up in the chairlift to be dazzled by the landscapes. There are also activities such as hiking, bike rentals, horseback riding and climbing areas.

It is located 62 kilometers from Uspallata, and the road, as you ascend, becomes more and more beautiful.

Puente del Inca, World Heritage Site

The energy of this place is felt as soon as you see it, a site full of history and nature. It is a natural bridge over the Cuevas River that was formed millions of years ago due to erosion. The sulfur contained in its waters gives it beautiful orange and yellow colors. It is part of the Andean road system known as Qhapaq Ñan”, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

In addition, under the bridge you can see an old thermal hotel that was buried by an avalanche in 1965.

Inca Bridge

Discover the Aconcagua Provincial Park

Two kilometers from the Puente del Inca is the Aconcagua Provincial Park, which protects the highest mountain in America. Its access is very easy since it is located just a few meters from National Route 7.

One of the trails suitable for everyone is the Laguna de Horcones. It lasts one hour and 30 minutes and allows you to see one of the walls of the Aconcagua mountain with its glaciers. If you plan to do it, calculate the time so that the return does not surprise you with poor light.

Aconcagua Hill

Aconcagua Hill

Last stop before Chile: Las Cuevas

You have practically reached the border with Chile. This small town is located 11 km from the entrance to the Aconcagua Provincial Park, continued by RN 7. From this point, you can begin the climb to Cristo Redentor, a famous landmark on the border with Chile, located 3,850 meters above sea level. It is 8 kilometers of a road that requires careful driving and in a low gear.

In the town of Las Cuevas are the old facilities of the Trans-Andean Railway. You can also visit the Casuchas del Rey, 18th century buildings that served as communication for the Viceroyalty.

Las Cuevas, Mendoza, Argentina

From Uspallata to the city of Mendoza on RP 52

If you decided to stay in Uspallata, it is best to explore each of these places at your own pace and by car. Once you have seen the best of this area, begin the return to the city of Mendoza.

We give you a recommendation: do not take RN 7, but instead, in Uspallata, turn off onto RP 52 and continue until you reach the old Villavicencio hotel. A spectacular landscape awaits you.

The path of the snails

The panoramic views on this section of RP 52 will surprise you. As the name says, it is a descent of curves and counter-curves that crosses part of the Villavicencio Nature Reserve. There are several viewpoints where you can stop, rest and contemplate the landscape and the silence of the mountain. From Uspallata to the old Villavicencio Hotel is 55 km. The road is gravel and is in good condition.

Villavicencio Nature Reserve

Here you will find the emblematic Villavicencio Hotel, the building that appears on the bottles of the mineral water brand. Inside the hotel, which is a National Historic Monument, there is an interpretive museum. It opens from Wednesday to Sunday (and holidays) from 09.30 to 17.30.

If you like outdoor activities, you can visit Villavicencio Park, which is inside the reserve. There is canopy, tree climbing and ziplining, among other activities.

To return to the city of Mendoza from Villavicencio, you have to take RP 52 again and drive to the capital. It is 50 kilometers.

Tips for driving in the mountains

Here are some tips to help you relax and enjoy the beautiful roads:

  • To descend a mountain road, it is best to do so with the engine in the lowest gears. Do not overuse the brakes, as they could be damaged.
  • For steep climbs, use first or second gear to give the engine more power.
  • There are many trucks on National Route 7. If you have one in front of you, wait for the ideal moment to overtake it. If you can’t, simply follow behind it.
  • If the truck is behind you, it is best to stay calm and wait for the next stop so that it can pass you by. Always use the car’s signals to let people know your movements.
  • In summer there is no snow, but if the weather surprises you, don’t forget to rent special chains.

Frequently asked questions when considering renting a car in Mendoza

When planning a trip to Mendoza, several frequently asked questions arise. In this post, we’ll cover everything you need to know to explore Mendoza in the best way and make the most of your trip.

Let’s get started!

Is it worth renting a car in Mendoza?

The undeniable answer to this question is YES! Some people say it’s not worth it because, “Why have a car if we’re going to drink wine?” Well, let me tell you, unfortunately, Mendoza doesn’t have a good public transport system. Or it does, but it’s not geared towards tourists, as most wineries are several kilometers away from the city, and taking an Uber, Cabify, or taxi is very expensive. A round trip will cost you more than a day’s car rental. It just doesn’t make sense!

Additionally, Mendoza isn’t just about wineries. If you want to go to the mountains, the only option is by car. You can’t come to Mendoza without visiting Potrerillos for at least a day. It’s a magical place you simply must experience.

So, by booking a car in advance, you’ll ensure the best price, and it will be super convenient. No doubt about it!

We’re sharing a discount code (BLOG10) for your next trip, so you can book at the best rate on https://rentennials.app

How much does it cost to rent a car in Mendoza?

Prices vary widely depending on the vehicle category, but to give you an idea, on the website https://rentennials.app you can find the best rates and a great variety of vehicles, like a Fiat Cronos at $40,000 per day, equivalent to USD 28 per day. Prices start from USD 20 for the most economical options and go up from there depending on the models. A hack is to book early to have plenty of choices and the best prices, rather than booking last minute and having to go with the most expensive models or inflated prices due to urgency!

Where to go by car in Mendoza?

1. High Mountain Circuit via RN 7

One of Mendoza’s must-see routes is the High Mountain Circuit along RN 7. This journey will take you through the stunning Andes Mountains, offering breathtaking views and stops at iconic spots. Here are the main highlights of this route:

Potrerillos Dam

One of the first highlights of the route is Potrerillos Dam. This reservoir, surrounded by mountains, is perfect for water activities and enjoying a picnic with spectacular views.

Uspallata

Continuing along the route, you’ll reach Uspallata, a charming mountain town offering a blend of history and nature. Here you can explore archaeological sites and experience local hospitality.

Penitentes

Further along, you’ll find the Penitentes ski resort, a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts. Even off-season, the views from this spot are amazing.

Puente del Inca

Puente del Inca is a stunning natural formation you should visit. This rock bridge over the Las Cuevas River is famous for its thermal waters and fascinating history.

Aconcagua Provincial Park

You can’t drive along RN 7 without stopping at Aconcagua Provincial Park. Here, you’ll have the chance to see the highest peak in the Americas, the majestic Aconcagua, and enjoy trails that bring you close to this giant of nature.

Las Cuevas

Finally, the route takes you to Las Cuevas, the last town before the Chilean border. It’s the perfect spot to pause and soak in the mountain’s tranquility before heading back.

This route along RN 7 is an excellent way to experience the beauty and diversity of Mendoza’s landscapes. From outdoor activities to moments of relaxation, the High Mountain Circuit has something for everyone.

2. Mendoza – Villavicencio – Uspallata – Mendoza

A route that takes about 5 or 6 hours to complete, covering around 350 kilometers. The journey takes you through all types of surfaces: pavement, dirt, and gravel. Mountain air, native wildlife, and vegetation. Start from the city in the morning, heading to Villavicencio. Upon arrival, you can stop, get out, and walk for a bit, explore the abandoned hotel, and enjoy the scenery. Next comes the dirt section, with curves and slopes but unique landscapes. From the car, you can take it all in without getting out, though stopping for a photo isn’t a bad idea. Then, you arrive in Uspallata, where you can get food, refuel, and tend to your needs. Finally, return home via Route 7.

3. Mendoza – Las Vegas – La Carrera – Tupungato – El Manzano – Mendoza

Similar duration and distance. Similar scenery, as captivating as the previous suggestion. It’s recommended to leave early in the morning, heading towards Las Vegas in Potrerillos. A technical stop with a convenience store. Then begins the dirt road, suitable for cars, toward Tupungato, known as “La Carrera” or “Manantiales.” It’s mostly straight stretches among the mountain plains, with only a few switchbacks. Reach your destination, then follow the wine routes to El Manzano Histórico. There are plenty of places to buy food or eat there. Finally, head down to Vista Flores and onto Route 40 back to Mendoza.

4. The Wine Routes

Start from Mendoza by car, heading towards Tupungato via Route 40, taking the “Los Cerrillos” turn-off. In about an hour, you’ll arrive. The real fun begins here. From Tupungato to El Manzano, as described above, you can follow “The Wine Routes.” The route winds through vineyards of the province’s major wineries. The architecture of the wineries adds to the already beautiful landscape. A must-see. Once you reach El Manzano, follow the instructions mentioned earlier.

5. San Rafael / Las Leñas

The southern part of Mendoza is far from the city, so it’s best not to make this a day trip! South Mendoza offers so many must-see destinations that it’s worth dedicating at least 3 to 5 days to fully experience it. Some highlights include:

Valle Grande: A reservoir close to San Rafael with a wide range of adventure tourism options on the river and at the site, plus many dining options along the way.

El Nihuil: Another reservoir near the city, a favorite among San Rafael residents.

Los Reyunos: A beautiful reservoir with a picturesque mountain village, ideal for those with boats for fishing or water sports.

Las Leñas: The famous ski resort in Malargüe, a popular destination in both winter and summer. In winter, it’s one of the most sought-after spots for snow and skiing or snowboarding. In summer and fall, you can also visit its stunning mountains and enjoy horseback riding, trekking, and more.

Valle Hermoso: Beyond Las Leñas lies Valle Hermoso (Caution! The road is not great; we don’t recommend it for small vehicles—ideally, high-clearance vehicles under 5 years old). This valley is straight out of a fairytale, with rivers and a lake where you can camp overnight in domes or tents. It’s a popular choice for anglers and those wanting to disconnect from technology for a while.
